Cheney voters were ready to pare down the current three mayoral candidates — Dennis Higbee, Hipolito Sarmiento and Allan Gainer — to two for the November general election.

Making the various circles in Cheney communicate better to create a more vital downtown was the top priority for Dr. Sue Wright, the newly named Pathways to Progress President.

Three fumbles by the Blackhawks helped pave the way for West Valley’s 21-6 Greater Spokane League football victory over Cheney. Denny McKee scored the lone touchdown for Cheney.

Sept. 14, 1995

Primary elections were on the immediate horizon in Cheney where the two finalists would be determined for City Council Position 4 that featured Barbara Boots, K.C. Bergland and Kathy Fleming.

Passage of an upcoming county-wide bond issue would help retire the current library debt for both Cheney and Medical Lake of about 24 cents per $1,000 in property value, but it would also produce new taxes of 12 cents per $1,000 for other projects in the area.

Cheney High School graduate Launi Meili, who won an Olympic Gold Medal in shooting in 1992, was about to be inducted into the Inland Northwest Sports Hall of Fame in ceremonies Oct. 11.

Sept. 19, 1985

Former Medical Lake School District Director Dale Jones moved a step closer to returning to the board following his 93-vote victory in the primary over incumbent Harry Teaford.

With the Federal Communications Commission having already approved a frequency of 100,000 watts, Cheney was closer to hosting a new radio station, KEYJ, owner John Rook said.

Quarterback Troy Clute rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another in Medical Lake’s 34-20 football win over visiting Colville.

Sept. 17, 1965

Jim Heiydt escaped with a nine-stitch cut on his head in a rollover accident involving a wheat combine he was driving on the Glenn Miller farm near Cheney. The combine caught fire, burned and was a total loss.

The committee promoting establishment of a new Cheney library submitted a petition containing 100 names to the City Council urging them to keep a $3,650 item in the budget that would provide a year’s worth of funding for the facility.

Mark Agnew, starting quarterback, punter and placekicker for the Medical Lake football team, was lost for the season with a broken ankle during a recent 14-0 loss to DeSales High of Walla Walla.
