Inland Power and Light’s chief executive officer, Kris Mikkelsen, was named the new chair for the Eastern Washington University board of trustees.

A benefit at Picnic Pines Resort was held for victims of a windstorm and subsequent fire that destroyed several trailer homes. The spaghetti dinner netted $2,500 to be doled out to those who suffered losses.

Cheney quarterback Mike Kinnie was a perfect 11-for-11 with three touchdown passes — two to tight end Matt Brunell — as the Blackhawks scored a 49-27 nonleague football win over the Cascade High Kodiaks in the opening game played in Peshastin, Wash.

Sept. 7, 1995

In a program that took place at EWU and involved job shadowing for students from Havermale Alternative School, the city of Cheney won an award for being the Job Shadow Site of the Year.

Cheney High School cross country coach Jay Martin reached his milestone 10th season with the team.

Sept. 12, 1985

A crowd of about 60 people jammed the building that was recently donated by Ted and Hannah Stahlborn for use as a new home for the Cheney Library. Mayor Tom Trulove read a proclamation recognizing the Stahlborns’ gesture.

The United States Air Force’s premiere precision acrobatic team, the Thunderbirds, were scheduled to perform at the Sept. 14 Aerospace Day at Fairchild Air Force Base.

Eastern Washington used 14 fourth quarter points to put distance between themselves and visiting Chico State University, earning a 28-3 nonconference football win at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane. Quarterback Rick Worman ended the night 31-of-58 passing for 388 yards, eight yards shy of the school record.

Sept. 10, 1965

The Cheney City Council adopted a preliminary city budget for 1966 showing $132,665 in revenues and $146,380 in expenses. A final balanced budget was expected to be approved at the Oct. 4 meeting.

The Cheney School District was projecting enrollment for the 1965-66 school year at 2,375 students superintendent William Riggs told the meeting of the board of directors.

Seventeen of 19 lettermen were among the 75 players who turned out for the first day of practice for Eastern Washington State College. The Savages were preparing to face Western Montana State at Spokane’s Joe Albi Stadium.
