The city of Cheney was considering construction of a new north-south arterial by initiating a study called the “North Eighth Street Traffic Circulation Analysis.”
While starters Erik Meyer at quarterback and wide receiver Eric Kimble sat out, backup QB Chris Peerboom and receiver Craig McIntyre led the Eastern Washington football team in its final scrimmage prior to meeting San Jose State in the opening game.

Dwayne Paul will meet Tom Showalter, and Harold Edgett will square off against Ray Hamel in November for Cheney City Council races following the results of the primary election that eliminated a pair of challengers, Ray Soltero and Brooks Murphy.
A Medical Lake man, 40-year-old Gordon Johnston, was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct after he allegedly wrestled with three Cheney police officers for 25 minutes at the police station.
Paul Harris caught six passes for 156 yards and Ken Merrill made 14 unassisted tackles as Cheney opened the football season with a 49-0 nonleague victory over visiting Colfax.

Cheney Superintendent of Schools William Riggs assured residents that the ongoing freeway construction near Four Lakes would not interfere with district busses.
Canvassers from the Spokane County Assessor’s office were seen in the Cheney, Medical Lake, Airway Heights and unincorporated areas of the county updating property assessments.
Eastern Washington State College football players were ready to begin practice Sept. 6 under third-year head coach Dave Holmes. After going winless in the two years before his arrival, Holmes was 3-6 in his first year at EWSC and 5-4 in 1964.
