Airway Heights award to honor local businesses

The city of Airway Heights is looking to recognize local business leaders and it is asking residents to help with the process.

The city is taking nominations for the first Community Excellence Award. According to the city’s website, the award is designed to recognize businesses for their volunteer work, community involvement and commitment to business ethics, as well as its customer service practices. The program is open to any for-profit business located in Airway Heights.

J.C. Kennedy, Parks, Recreation and Community Services director, said the idea of the program came from the city’s effort to reach out to local business owners and holding the semi-annual business breakfast.

“This is for businesses that go above and beyond their normal customer service,” Kennedy said. “We want to hear their stories and start recognizing those businesses.”

To nominate a business, residents visit the city’s website and fill out a form explaining why it should receive the award. Voting is limited to one email address per resident and is open until Aug. 27. Kennedy said the city will have a table with information at the summer festival, Aug. 22.

Staff will present the winner with a plaque at the business breakfast, Oct. 7, at Northern Quest Resort and Casino. There will also be a plaque at City Hall, recognizing the business.

The business breakfast is an event the city used to hold as a way to communicate with local business owners. Kennedy explained that the breakfast, as well as the award, are ways the city is reaching out to local businesses and making them feel like a part of the community.

“It’s something that we’ve recently neglected and need to get back into,” Kennedy said. “Business owners are a vital part of the community, just like our residents. We need to provide the best area for businesses to grow.”
