Virgil Dean Bonk passed away July 17, 2015 in Spokane, Wash. He was 86. Virgil was born March 31, 1929 in Sprague, Wash. to Carl A. and Lyda E. Bonk and was the youngest of three children (Ted and Evelyn).
Virgil was raised in Sprague and graduated from Sprague High School in 1947. He married the love of his life, Iva Ruth Lefebvre, March 26, 1955 and moved to Cheney. There they bought their first home and had two daughters, Lori and Teresa.
Virgil started working for the Cheney post office in 1956 and retired after 30 years of service in 1986. Shortly after his retirement, Virgil and his wife purchased their dream home on Liberty Lake where he resided until 2007. They loved to travel and went on many cruises until the passing of Iva in 1993.
After her passing he continued to travel with his brother Ted, sister Evelyn, and brother-in-law Jack. When he was unable to care for his home he sold it and moved closer to family. He then resided in the Wandermere area of Spokane until his passing. Virgil loved being close to his family and especially loved spending time with his great-grandchildren.
His family would like to thank all the kind and wonderful nurses at Regency Care Center who cared for Virgil.
Virgil was preceded in death by his wife, brother Ted Bonk, brother-in-law Jack Spurgeon and son-in-law Steven Hand Sr. He is survived by his two daughters, Teresa Hand and Lori Swanson both of Spokane; sister, Evelyn Spurgeon of Hayden Lake, Idaho; granddaughters, Nichole (Darren) Proszek of Spokane, Mandy Horner of Florida, Jennifer Swanson and Christina (Mark) Scott of Spokane; grandsons Travis Horner, William Hand and Steven Hand Jr. of Spokane as well as six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday July, 24, 2015 from noon - 1:30 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Sprague with funeral to follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Macabee Cemetery in Sprague. In lieu of flowers donations may be made at your nearest Banner Bank branch or mailed to 506 E. Hastings Road, Spokane WA 99218 to benefit Regency Care Center in Virgil's name. Danekas Funeral Home-Ritzville is entrusted with arrangements.
