Summerhawks shut out Red Storm 12-0
The Cheney Summerhawks 15U baseball team picked up their first win of the season and snapped a four-game losing streak, Monday after they shut out the Red Storm, 12-0. Before that game, they lost to the Hurricanes, 7-4, June 30.
Against the Hurricanes, the Summerhawks got an early burst of offense, scoring all four of their runs in the first inning, including Luke Martin’s two-run home run. Unfortunately the Hurricanes were able to mount their own offensive attack and came back to win.
“Our guys were being much more aggressive this time at the plate,” head coach Nick Fell said. “They were battling on two-strike pitches whereas before they would just let them go by. Unfortunately the Hurricanes got their momentum going and won.”
Jacob Lauber (0-2) started the game while Julian Chabot came in to relieve him in the sixth inning.
“They did really well and kept us in the game,” Fell said.
Against the Red Storm, Cheney scored two runs in the first inning. They added three in the third inning and seven in the fourth to force the mercy rule in the fifth. Offensive highlights included doubles from Martin and Chabot, as well as Garrett Hagel’s two-RBI single.
Maikie Goodloe (1-1) got his first win on the mound, throwing a one-hitter.
“The boys showed up ready to play and looking for some revenge,” Fell said. “Last time they played the Red Storm, they didn’t feel they were playing to their potential.”
The Red Storm shut out Cheney, 6-0, June 25 in their first game against each other.
Cheney is now 1-4 and sits in fourth place in the Spokane Indians Youth Baseball League standings. After their July 7 game against the Joes, the Summerhawks will play the Hurricanes July 13 at Rogers JV baseball field in Spokane.
“It was good to see them get that first win and finally get that monkey off their back,” Fell said. “Baseball is contagious and hopefully we can keep this momentum going.”
