The residential growth trend continued for Medical Lake as it was announced a new addition to Silver Hills would contain 72 homes on a 27-acre development named Silver Hills West.

Flickering lights in a large number of Cheney households were attributed to some of the 500 insulators installed a decade ago that were deemed defective. The problem happened following rainstorms.

Val Von Lehe, who coached the Medical Lake High School girl’s basketball program from 1984-1992, but resigned to raise a new baby, returned to the sidelines as she was named to replace Sandy Zimmerman whose contract was not renewed.

July 6, 1995

Four positions on the Cheney City Council, those of Dwayne Paul, Kevin Hanson, Irene Wahl and Barbara Boots,were looking for opponents in the upcoming general election.

Nearly 1,000 people attended the recently completed Culpepper and Meriweather Fourth of July circus in Cheney.

The Cheney Rodeo announced a significant increase in the purse for the 28th annual event as competitors would now compete for a total of $30,000, up $10,000 from 1994.

July 4, 1985

Angered that the EWU board of trustees agreed to keep the school’s athletic program funded at its current level through 1990, the Faculty Senate voted to cease all faculty committee work and ask the board to rescind its decision.

More than 300 entrants were poised to compete at the 18th annual Cheney Rodeo, the largest amateur event of its kind in the Northwest.

Recent Central Washington University graduate Dave Cook was hired as the interim sports information director at EWU, taking over for Jim Price who was taking a year’s leave of absence.

July 3, 1975

A trophy named for late Cheney businessman Ed Betz was going to be awarded by the Cheney Rodeo Association to the best all around cowboy.

Cheney police were investigating the theft of an automobile owned by Raymond Gilles from his residence. Police later reported speeds reached over 100 miles-per-hour during an ensuing chase where the driver and vehicle escaped.

Ron Huffman pitched a two-hit, 11 strikeout game to help Holsum Bread win their 11th consecutive game, 2-1.

50 Years Ago

July 2, 1965

The bowling alley on the highway near the Marshall turnoff, which caved in due to heavy snows last winter, was finally being torn down. Most of the material can be salvaged, including two of the lanes.

Eastern Washington State College announced the hiring of Dick Hoover, the news director at KREM radio and television as an assistant professor of journalism.

The Eastern Washington Recreation Association swim team, coached by Sue Senske, competed in a meet at Selah, Wash. where Tom Stone took first place in one-meter diving.
