The Cheney Summerhawks 15U team went 0-2 in their first week in the Spokane Indians Youth Baseball League after losses to the Joes, 5-0, June 15 and the Northwest Hurricanes, 7-6, June 18.
Against the Joes, Cheney wasn’t able to mount any offense at the plate.
“Our pitching did well except for a couple of errors,” head coach Nick Fell said. “They kept us in the game but we just couldn’t get things going.
Jacob Lauber (0-1) and Julian Chabot shared pitching duties.
The Summerhawks responded better against the Hurricanes. After being down 6-5, Lauber’s double, followed by Kaden Hagel’s two-RBI triple put Cheney in the lead. In the last inning, the Hurricanes came back after a couple of Cheney fielding errors. Jonathan Owings, Maikie Goodloe (0-1) and Lauber shared time on the mound.
One of the changes for the Summerhawks is they will get to play their home games at Cheney High School. At the start of the season, the league scheduled all of Cheney’s games outside of the West Plains. For Fell, playing at home is an added boost of morale for the team.
“It’s nice to be able to show up in your home park and play ball without having to worry about what time you need to leave and finding the field,” Fell said.
The Summerhawks are in fourth place in the 15U SIYB standings. Cheney played NW Premier’s 15U team on Monday (scores and statistics were not available as of press time). After their June 24 game against the Joes (2-1), they face the Red Storm (0-3) at North Central’s Pacific Park in Spokane today (June 25).
After their busy week, Fell said his team will continue to work on hitting and fielding as they head into July.
“We won’t get an opportunity to practice this week, but after we’ll definitely be focused,” Fell said.
