The Cheney Summerhawks 17U baseball team had a short week after a 14-5 loss to Northwest Premier Baseball Club’s 16U team.
Cheney struggled to get their offense going, having only five hits. Head coach Austin Sharp said his team had plenty of runners on base, which in part was due to Premier’s pitching staff, who walked 14 Cheney batters.
“We couldn’t get people to score,” Sharp said. “We left plenty of runners on base, but we weren’t able to execute.”
At the plate, Andrew Witt was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Dylan Arthur, Phillip Murray, Matt Riggs and Logan Pratt all had hits.
Pratt, Arthur (0-1) and Cade VanWormer shared pitching duties on the mound.
“Dylan threw a lot of strikes but these guys were a 16U team that had 20 hits on us,” Sharp said. “They hit about every good pitch we threw at them. It was just one of those nights for us.”
The Summerhawks are 3-5 for the season. After their June 23 game against the 17U Crew, Cheney finishes the month with a doubleheader against Priest River tonight (June 25) at Medical Lake and a home game against Kellogg in Cheney, June 26. The Summerhawks split a doubleheader against Priest River in the second week of the season.
“We’re looking forward to this busy week, it will be good competition for us and get us ready for the tournament in July,” Sharp said.
Despite no longer being affiliated with American Legion, Cheney will host a pod for the Spokane American Legion Wood Bat Classic Tournament, July 2-5. The Summerhawks’ pod includes the Regina Athletics, Moses Lake Walleyes, Lewis and Clark Tigers and Sunnyside. Sharp said he had played against a couple of aforementioned teams when he was an assistant coach at Medical Lake.
“There is not an easy team in our pod,” Sharp said. “We should have everyone back from football camp by then. They are going to have to battle in those first two days. It’s a good experience for my guys.”
