Cheney High School’s Tyler Koohns and Cheyenne Marchand ended their season at the 2A Golf State championships, May 27-28.
Marchand finished 19th out of 40, shooting a combined 177 over both rounds. This is an improvement from last year’s state tournament where she finished 22nd and shot a 195.
Head coach Gerald Morton praised Marchand’s performance, saying she made great contact with the ball, however her putting game fell short.
“She summed it up perfectly when she said ‘It’s like I completely forgot how to putt,’” Morton said. “Sometimes its mental, sometimes it’s frustration and other times as you keep lipping the ball out, the confidence starts going away. In her case it was a combination of all three.”
Morton added that Marchand has already signed up for several WJGA (Washington Junior Golf Association) tournaments and will work on her golf game during the summer to prepare for her senior season.
“I can guarantee that her clubs will collect no dust during the offseason,” Morton said,
Koohns shot an 81 in his first state tournament appearance but did not advance to the second round after missing the 80-stroke cutoff.
During the regular season, Marchand finished in the top 3 in all Great Northern League tournaments, including her first win in the GNL April 28 tournament at the Fairways Golf Course. In his first year on the team, Koohns performed well at several league competitions including a third-place finish at the April 28 GNL tournament at the Links Golf Course in Post Falls, Idaho.
The boy’s team will lose Peter Condon, Nicholas Christianson, Matt Janes and Taylor McNall to graduation. All of the players from the girls’ varsity team are expected to return next season.
