Cheney 15U Summerhawks preps for summer season

The Cheney Summerhawks 15U baseball team is preparing for a change of scenery.

Unlike Cheney’s 17U team, which plays an independent schedule this summer, the 15U squad will compete in the Spokane Indians Youth Baseball League. The Summerhawks’ will play all of their games outside of the West Plains.

“We were talking with the league to see if we can use Westwood Middle School as a home field for us,” 15U head coach Nick Fell said. “But we’re the newbies of the league, so we understood if we had to play all of our games outside of Cheney.”

Fell, who was an assistant coach for the Cheney High School junior varsity team and Summerhawks, is in his first year as head coach. He said his team is comprised of high school and eighth graders, many of whom have played baseball together in Little League and in All Stars.

“They recognize each other’s strengths,” Fell said. “We have a lot of young talent. I have guys who want to work and hustle. That’s what I like to see as a coach.”

Before the first game, Fell hopes to finalize the positions. The team is working on fundamentals, building their comradery and “getting back into baseball rhythm.”

“We’re making sure that we are on the same page,” Fell said. “Baseball is a mental game and the last thing we want as a team is to beat ourselves.”

While winning games is important, Fell said he wants players to have fun and get experience to prepare them for next spring.

“Right now, we know what we need to do to get ready for this new league,” Fell said. “We are looking forward to the challenge.”

Cheney begins its season against The Joes, June 15, at Canfield Middle School in Coeur d’Alene.
