Heavy traffic along State Route 902 through Medical Lake could be minimized under a new proposed Urban Growth Area boundary.

The Rainbow Cove and Resort of Medical Lake was recently sold and will be renamed Dan’s Landing.

A surprise second place finish from Zak Nelson in singles and Medical Lake’s third place in doubles from Max Nelson and Tanner Tareski led the Cardinals to a repeat 2A state tennis title.

Steve Miller of Miller Law Office — and Cheney’s city attorney — was ordered to pay $200,000 in restitution to the estate of Mamie Ottomeier over a charge that Miller illegally acquired her estate.

Eastern Washington University announced that 1,934 undergrad and 328 masters candidates would take part in the June 16 commencement exercise at the Special Events Pavilion.

Tucker Urdahl was named as the Frontier League’s baseball MVP and Craig Yarwood picked up the same award for tennis in awards announced by Cheney High School.

June 13, 1985

EWU’s 103rd commencement exercise at the Special Events Pavilion was preparing to bestow 1,574 bachelors degrees, plus another 390 masters degrees.

Carol Wilde, a 14-year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service, assumed the duties of Cheney postmaster, replacing the retiring Elmo Bartlett.

Four members of the Cheney High School soccer team were honored on the all-league team for the Inland Empire Soccer League. They include Rusty Emtman and Mark Kiver on the first team while Bill Haugen and Kirk Stephens were named to the second team.

June 12, 1975

By a vote of 5-1, the Cheney City Council voted not to close College Street from First and Second Streets for a proposed Bicentennial Mall.

Longtime Cheney community leader and manager of the Cheney branch of the Seattle First National Bank, Ed Betz, died in a Spokane hospital at age 60 following surgery.

Eastern Washington State College’s Woodward Field was preparing to host an estimated 600 athletes, including 50 from the Cheney Track Club. Some of the local athletes included Mike Gill in the javelin who had a throw of 183 feet, 10 inches in the state meet.

June 11, 1965

The Cheney School District was facing money problems following news that the state Legislature was not going to provide the amount of money officials thought. The district faced a deficit of $60,000 according to William Riggs, superintendent of the Cheney School District.

Cheney’s new American LaFrance pumper fire truck, capable of delivering 1,500 gallons a minute, arrived in town after having been obtained from the city of Union Gap, Wash.

Fifth District Congressman Tom Foley announced the receipt of a $750,000 grant that would help in the construction of the new John F. Kennedy Library at EWSC.
