Nonleague tennis competition dominated Medical Lake’s schedule last week as the Cardinal boys and girls each sandwiched a pair of 3-2 wins over Lakeside around matches against Lind-Ritzville-Sprague plus competition in the annual Inland Empire Invite.
In their victory over Lakeside the Northeast A League leading Cardinal boys got a sweep in doubles play to improve to 6-1. Isiah Farmen and Austin Brown won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. The No. 3 doubles team of Colten Miller and Trevor Nilles also scored a sweep 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3 doubles while Kason Bailey and Alex Neder rallied to take a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
“These two really had a long battle to get the win,” co-head coach Jake Wesselman said of Bailey and Neder’s match.
Where the boys match was won at doubles, the girls took both singles matches, plus the No. 1 doubles.
Alyssa Fitzgerald scored a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, Annika Gahan picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles and the No. 1 doubles pair of Annette Carlson and Cassidy Hagel 6-1, 7-6(8-6) win.
“(It was) another solid performance from Alyssa,” co-head coach Dawn Eliassen said.
In the nonleague outing against LRS, Carlson and Hagel won 6-4, 6-3 while Alyssa Pena and Jasmine Uribes earned a No. 3 doubles win to go with a forfeit when only four girls attended the match from LRS.
“Alyssa and Jasmine really fought hard in the first set to get the win,” Eliassen said.
Gahan got the other victory at No. 2 singles to complete the 4-1 win. The ML boys were 4-1 losers to LRS with Bailey and Neder collecting a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles.
In the Inland Empire Invite Medical Lake qualified five players for the second day of the event, the most ever. They included Noah Ray in boys’ singles (8th), the mixed doubles pairing of Tyler Krivolavy and Alyssa Fitzgerald (7th) and Carlson and Hagel (8th) in girls’ doubles.
