If Medical Lake is to repeat as 1A state track champions later this month at Eastern Washington University it will happen because of their experience and finishes in bigger meets against larger schools.
That means the Cardinals twin losses April 28 to Deer Park and to Lakeside (team scores unavailable) in a boy’s triple dual meet April 28 at Medical Lake does not particularly worry co-head coach Gene Blankenship.
“The results tell us that we are a very good district and state meet team, but we don’t have enough depth to win the tougher dual meets,” Blankenship said.
Medical Lake got anticipated wins from Tellas Johnson in both the 100 and 200-meter runs. Johnson topped teammate Dawson Lack in a close one by just 3/10ths of a second, 11.0 – 11.3 seconds. Johnson clocked a time of 22.6 and took the 200 over Ethan Pratt of Lakeside and Lack who finished in a dead heat with twin times of 23.3.
Domenic Rehm scored wins in the 800 and 1,600 meters. Rehm recorded a time of 1 minute, 58.7 seconds in the 800 and was just ahead of teammate Micah Dingfield, 4:37.1-4:37.4. Noah Kroeze led a Medical Lake domination in the 3,200, topping Dingfield 10:11.5-10:17 and Rehm’s 10:38.9 fourth place finish.
“Micah is showing consistent improvement and should be ready to run his best by the end of the season,” Blankenship said. “It will make us that much stronger as a team.”
Medical Lake’s usually strong 4x100 relay team had its potential victory thwarted by a dropped baton.
The Cardinals had notable efforts in field events. Elijah Farmen’s 44 foot, 7.5 inch throw in the shot put was second to winner Aaron Obert of Deer Park (56-1). Nate Davis threw 41-2.5 for third.
Farmen was second in the discus (137-9) and won the javelin at 158-11. Jackson Tappero’s 126-2 was fourth. Tellas Johnson had another win in the long jump at 18-11.
“We are showing significant improvement in the field area,” Blankenship said.
Lexi Rolan 13-second even time won the girls’ 100 meters and was just 1/10th of a second behind Sienna Swan, 26.7-26.8 in the 200.
Medical Lake sent a small contingent of competitors to the Shoreline Invitational with the 4x100 team of Lack, Farmen, Johnson and Jared Wright seventh. Both Rehm (800, 3:57.03) and Jacob Dingfield (3,200, 9:38.9) set new school records for those distances.
