The third attempt to land a hotel across from the Cheney Plaza Shopping Center on Betz Road — this time a Holiday Inn Express — is contingent on whether the obstacle of a city-owned road can be cleared.

An investigation showed two anonymous complaints made against the Wagon Wheel Tavern Bar and Grill in Medical Lake to the Washington Liquor Control Board were unfounded.

Rumors that Medical Lake head basketball coach Arnold Brown would move to an opening at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane were put to rest when he withdrew his name from consideration. Brown, a 1982 Medical Lake High School graduate, was 50-23 in three years on the job with two state tournament appearances and said, “I’ve always been a Cardinal.”

May 3, 1995

Suspects in a 1982 Chevy Camaro led Cheney police on a 45-minute high-speed chase through both city and rural roads before abandoning the car near Tyler and escaping.

A public hearing was scheduled on a proposed recreational trail between Fish Lake and Cheney that would use a former railroad right-of-way.

A 4-0 shutout over Clarkston helped Cheney finish with an 11-0-1 Frontier League record and 13-0-3 overall in soccer play.

May 16, 1985

U.S. 5th District Rep. Tom Foley spoke at a dedication ceremony on the Eastern Washington University campus and told the audience attending the ribbon cutting at Wim Albers Court that “an improved budget” was in the near future for the United States.

EWU’s proposed move to the Big Sky Conference received mixed reaction on campus. The Academic Senate, citing concern over athletics taking financial resources away from academics, voted 24-6 against the idea. Meanwhile, the Associated Students Council supported a reduced $1.7 million budget with an 8-1 vote.

Eastern Washington split a baseball doubleheader with Oregon State, the winning runs coming on an eighth inning three-run home run from Steve Brown in his final college plate appearance in a 10-9 victory. The Eagles were eliminated from postseason the previous day after a loss to the University of Portland.

May 8, 1975

Spokane County Commissioners approved the $7.4 million West Plains Water Project that would supply water to Cheney, Medical Lake and Spokane International Airport.

Anthony Singleton was named new Cheney Fire Chief according to an announcement from city administrative assistant, Charlie Earl, and will earn $1,120 monthly.

The Eastern Washington State College track team, coached by Jerry Martin, was favored to defend their 1974 Evergreen Conference title in the league meet at Western Oregon in Monmouth, Ore.

May 7, 1965

An EWSC student reported nearly $300 from a cashed paycheck missing from an envelope he left on the front seat of his car. The student did not want to carry that much cash with him while he ran other errands in downtown Cheney.

Cheney Motors at 308 First St. announced the donation of a new Plymouth convertible for use by the auto mechanics students at Cheney High School as they prepared for upcoming state competition in Seattle.

Cheney High School’s track team finished fifth in a recent meet at Medical Lake in which Gordon Olson took first in the javelin, Bill McMillan won in the two-mile and the team of Bob Bartlett, Mike Bennett, Dan Noel and Warren Heinemann claiming the mile relay.
