Cheney tennis defeats Hounds, Eagles in Great Northern play

Blackhawks sweep GSL’s North Central

The Cheney High girls’ tennis team continue to power through Great Northern League competition, picking up wins over Pullman, 4-3, April 21, and West Valley, 5-2, April 23, as well as a 7-0 win over Greater Spokane League’s North Central, April 24.

No. 1 singles star Katelynn Smedley went 3-0, picking up easy wins over Pullman’s Ana D’Acosta (6-1, 6-0) and West Valley’s Alexsandra Powell (6-2, 6-2), as well as shutting out North Central’s Jenna Bothun (6-0, 6-0).

Bridget Calvert, No. 2 singles, continued her undefeated streak with victories over the Greyhounds’ Maddie Kasimanickam (6-4, 6-2), the Eagles’ Xena Chhoeun (6-0, 6-0) and the Indians’ Abby Colestock (6-1, 6-0).

Grace Pohl made a successful return to No. 3 singles, defeating Pullman’s Jackie McAleer (7-5, 6-2) and West Valley’s Alisha Treece (6-4, 6-2) in close matches, as well as a shutout victory over Taylor Cassan (6-0, 6-0).

In her second week at No. 4 singles, Emily Howard went 3-0 with wins over Pullman’s Amber Robbins (6-2, 6-3), West Valley’s Janelle Lang (6-1, 6-3) and North Central’s Kaeli Glissmeyer (6-0, 6-0).

Kaitlyn Sweeney and Sarah Fillmore, No. 1 doubles, went 1-2 with a win against North Central’s Sandrene Hansen and Rachel Corsino (6-2, 6-4).

Sadie Knutson and Linsay Sweitzer, No. 2 doubles, picked up their only win of the week against the Indians’ Taryn Kilborn and Makayla McKenna (6-2, 6-0).

Alannah Lewis and Amparo Contreras went 2-1 with wins over West Valley’s Marie Tait and Meseret Dokken (6-4, 6-4) and North Central’s Zoe Zywiak and Nadina Mrkaljevic (6-0, 6-2).

Cheney is 4-1 in league competition and 7-3 overall. After their April 28 match against former GNL rival Deer Park, Cheney returns home to host East Valley, April 30. The Blackhawks swept the Knights, 7-0, earlier this month.
