The Cheney High boys tennis team returned to Great Northern League action this past week with a 7-0 sweep over East Valley April 14 and a 6-1 loss to Clarkston April 15.
Ryan Smedley snapped his two-match losing streak and shut out the Knight’s Josh Fraser (6-0, 6-0) in the No. 1 singles spot.
Ryan Axtell, No. 2 singles, defeated the Knight’s Josh Lee (6-3, 6-2). Britton Williams, No. 3 singles, won his match with East Valley’s Tristan Fish (6-1, 6-0). Ben Sanchez, No. 4 singles, defeated the Knights’ Yuan Hao Wang (6-0, 6-2).
“Everyone got in a few practices during spring break and kept them from being rusty,” head coach Jesse Erickson said. “It paid off against East Valley.”
Cheney’s doubles teams also shined against East Valley. Like Smedley, Shogo Starr and Adam Passey, at No. 1 doubles, snapped their two-match losing streak after defeating East Valley’s Sean Haight and Zach Hanson (6-1, 7-6) in a close match. Luke Huguenin and Jordan Kauwe, No. 2 doubles, defeated the Knights’ Gage Edens and Garrett Crothers (6-0, 6-1). J.T. Gould and Brandon Foster shut out East Valley’s Tim Ngo and Ryan Haight (6-0, 6-0). Gould and Foster picked up the only win for Cheney in the Clarkston match. They defeated the Bantams’ Tanner Carton and Tony Gunderson (6-4, 5-7, 6-3).
“All of our doubles teams have been working together and communicating well,” Erickson said. “They’ve been getting great angles on their shots.”
The Blackhawks are 2-1 in the GNL and 6-2 overall. After their April 21 match against Pullman, they face West Valley April 23 for the second time this season, at home, then host Greater Spokane League’s North Central April 24 in a nonleague match.
“I’m looking forward to all of those matches,” Erickson said. “As long as we can stay healthy, I’m expecting big things from these guys.”
