It took the Cheney boys soccer team just five days to climb back into the win column after seeing their four-year long Great Northern League winning streak finally snapped at 45 by East Valley.
Oliver Smith connected on an unassisted goal in the 33rd minute, and then assisted Spencer Yeager with his goal in the 51st minute in what proved to be the game winner against visiting Pullman, downing the Greyhounds 2-1 last Tuesday, April 7 in a battle for first place in the GNL. Pullman outshot Cheney 6-4, with Blackhawks goalkeeper Kameron Galm making five saves.
The win gives Cheney, 6-3-1 overall, 5-1 GNL (15 points), a one-game lead over the Greyhounds, 7-3, 4-2 (12 points). It’s the second victory for the Blackhawks against their southern rivals for the league crown, with Cheney winning in Pullman on March 21 by an identical 2-1 score.
The two schools meet one more time in the regular season, April 23 in Pullman. Cheney wraps up the second round of league play this week, traveling to Clarkston on Tuesday, April 14, and returning home to host West Valley on Thursday, April 16.
