On Saturday March 21, over 50 Latter Day Saint youth and adult leaders from Cheney and Medical Lake volunteered four hours of their time to clear Salnave Park of pine needles. The volunteers worked hard and had fun learning to put service to others ahead of themselves while also discovering the path to happiness.
According to Rick Engel, city of Cheney park supervisor, it was one of the best workdays in his career. He has been with the Cheney Parks and Recreation Department over 20 years. Engel said, "In four hours the group completed what would have taken me and my associates two weeks."
Engel was impressed with the turnout, saying, "This is the first group to come with the amount of people they said they would bring."
The city has an environmentally friendly method for recycling the pine needles gathered during the service project. The pine needles were dumped at the Cheney Green Waste facility where they mix them with other green waste to create mulch.
Lynette Hagel and Kamerra Foster are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
