Letters to the Editor
As a parent, community member and educator I ask Cheney’s citizens to consider the important role quality facilities can play in the education of our youth, and also about the message sent to the children and educators in our community when people choose not to vote.
I have lived and worked in Cheney for nearly 12 years. Cheney School District hires outstanding people, and I know they will do their best work given any circumstance.
However, the amazing new facilities we have built for our Cheney and Westwood middle school students provide opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. My son is able to walk into Cheney Middle School on a daily basis confident that he will be invited into a comfortable environment where he can use common areas to socialize, eat breakfast, and review homework.
These same areas provide opportunities for teachers to hold collaborative classes and meet with large groups of kids. Students enjoy lunch without cramming around tables or sitting on floors. My son is able to take computer and science classes that weren’t previously offered due to lack of space and technology. He talks about these classes every day and is eager to attend them. Having worked for five years in the old Cheney Middle School, I know students and teachers were not nearly as excited about a school that didn’t meet their needs.
Consider walking into a business or doctor’s office and having no place to sit or even stand. Would you want to be there? Would you look for an alternative?
Consider trying to be innovative in your job and not being able to carry your ideas forward because the lack of space wouldn’t allow for it. Would you look for a job somewhere else where you could do your best work?
I thank the voters who approved the levy on Feb. 10, and I am asking for long-term support and participation from Cheney’s citizens in future elections. What message do you want to send to Cheney’s students and educators?
