Reed, O'Brien earn alternate berths to Mat Classic XXVII

Medical Lake wrestlers earned a pair of alternate qualifiers to Mat Classic XXVII in Tacoma in regional competition held last Saturday in Leavenworth.

Nick Reed at 113 pounds and Ian O’Brien (285) will venture to the Tacoma Dome this Friday and Saturday and play the waiting game in case others in their weight classes cannot compete.

“The region was very tough, especially our league,” Medical Lake head coach Sam Petersen said. “The other district (Region 4) only had three wrestlers in the finals and only has 11 out of the 56 state berths, so our league got the majority of the berths.”

The addition of former 2A powers, Deer Park and Colville to the 1A ranks made it a great deal more difficult for Medical Lake, Petersen explained.

Hudson Petek at 160 pounds placed sixth. “Hudson wrestled particularly well, he was a pigtail just to get in and almost made it to state,” Petersen said.
