Medical Lake seniors earn special victories

The Medical Lake seniors who did wrestle in the final home match will take away pleasant memories, both personal and for their team which defeated Riverside 47-30 Jan. 29.

Both Justin Brundage at 152 pounds and Hudson Petek (160) earned easy victories as Medical Lake won its first Northeast A League dual meet of the season. Those wins gave the Cardinals some breathing room.

"It was a great match for him on senior night," Cardinals' head coach Sam Petersen said of Brundage who scored a technical fall.

Petek took just 1 minute, 5 seconds to pin his opponent.

"It was a good way to end his career at home," Petersen said.

Nick Reed, a junior at 113 pounds breezed to a pin in just 32 seconds. "Nick's just starting to get into wrestling shape after being out for over a month," Petersen said. "I hope he hits his stride next week at districts."

Medical Lake got five wins from forfeits including sophomore Bodhi Forbes (120 pounds), freshman Sam Griffey (132) and three seniors, Jackson Tappero (182), Brandon Satcher (195) and Ian O'Brien (285).

Next up for the Cardinals will be district competition this Friday with sub-districts in Chewelah and Deer Park hosting districts Saturday.

"We have all of our guys that we will bring to districts healthy now for the first time this year," Petersen said. He hopes that will allow a few Cardinal wrestlers to advance to regionals Feb. 13-14 in Leavenworth and, perhaps, Mat Classic XXUII in Tacoma, Feb. 20-21.

The top-six in each weight class move on to regionals. "Hopefully we have a good week of practice and perform well at districts," Petersen said.
