Ferguson takes top spot in North Idaho Rumble

The Cheney High wrestling team finished the regular season Jan. 30-31 in Coeur d’ Alene competing at the North Idaho Rumble.

Michael Ferguson took home another first-place finish in the 220-pound weight division. After a first-round bye, Ferguson had back-to-back second-period pins over Post Falls’ Quinn Bennett and Elijah Bennett. In the finals he pinned Lakeland’s Conor Shepherd in the first period.

Braden Wirth, Tyler Thomas, Devon Waterman, Kodi Smith and Garrett Pederson had wins in the tournament but were eliminated in the consolation rounds. In team scores the Blackhawks placed 11th out of 16 teams with 51 points.

Prior to the North Idaho Rumble, Cheney had back-to-back duals against Medical Lake and Pullman. No scores from either of those matches were available at press time.

Cheney begins their postseason Feb. 7 with a trip to East Valley to compete in the GNL districts. Last year the Blackhawks had seven wrestlers advance to regionals including Ferguson, Pederson, Smith and Waterman.
