Letters to the Editor
Every now and then, we are asked to make an investment in the future for our children. Now is that time to help with the overcrowding situation at Cheney High School.
Please join us in voting “Yes” for the Cheney Public School bond and levy on the Feb. 10 ballot. We have two children who have attended the high school and taken part in numerous extracurricular activities. They have been a part of the growing classes of students.
This growth has resulted in using eight portable classrooms placed in the front parking lot for the needed space. Our kids have talked about the crowded hallways, and of the cafeteria being too crammed to even consider utilizing for lunch. And that’s not to mention the many, many music performances by our award-winning bands we’ve had to listen to in the gym because of the lack of a performing arts facility.
The school was originally built for 900 students, not the 1,200 it currently serves and the many more expected as the West Plains continues to grow. The school is 48 years old and the last renovation came 20 years ago.
The bond will help address the congestion issues, as well as provide a much-improved environment for learning. The proposed improvements will address student growth through 2027. We take pride knowing that the younger children of the parents we work with and the kids in our neighborhood will get to reap the benefits of our investment.
A school is a place to learn, but it is also a place to gather, take part in extracurricular activities and create relationships – schools are a powerful place for kids to grow. It’s a home away from home for active students who can easily spend a 40-hour week there.
Let’s invest in their future by voting “Yes” to this bond, as well as the maintenance and operations levy, which expires in 2015. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to support the Cheney School District.
Vote “Yes!”
