Cheney High’s Williams commits to EWU for football

Cheney High School senior Keenan Williams has made an oral commitment to Eastern Washington University to play football for the three-time defending Big Sky Conference champion Eagles.

The 6-foot-3-inch, 262 pound Blackhawk is a three-time All-Great Northern League first-team selection on defense at defensive end, and three-time All-GNL second-team selection on offense as a tight end. According to information from the Cheney Football Association, Williams is also on Ron Siegel’s list of the top-30 “Best of Class Senior and Junior Athletes in Washington state, who was recruited by 20 schools, receiving offers from four: EWU, University of Idaho, University of Wyoming and admission support from Harvard.

Official signing day for all high school recruits is Feb. 4.

Harvey earns another Big Sky ‘Player of the Week’ award

After a 61-point weekend for the Eastern Washington University men’s basketball team, junior guard Tyler Harvey has been selected as the co-Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season and fifth time in his career. He shares the honor with Sacramento State’s Mikh McKinney.

On the watch list for the Lou Henson Award given to the nation’s top mid-major player, Harvey also earned Big Sky Player of the Week honors from Collegeinsider.com. Also last week, he was picked as the “deadliest 3-point assassin” in the nation by bleacherreport.com.

The nation’s leader in scoring (24.1 points per game) and 3-pointers (4.40 per game), Harvey made 16-of-27 (59 percent) shots overall last week. He made 7-of-15 (47 percent) from the 3-point line and 22 of 25 (88 percent) from the charity stripe. He also had seven rebounds, seven assists and a pair of steals.

His performances included a 35-point outing against Northern Colorado, his fourth with at least 30 this season. He added 26 points two days later against North Dakota. The Eagles beat the Bears 95-85 and then scored 67 points in the first half of a 102-80 win over UND.

National Letter of Intent Day features live broadcast, luncheon

The Eastern Washington University Athletics Department will be airing a live video broadcast of National Signing Day the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 4. beginning at 8 a.m. on WatchBigSky.com.

Following the live show, fans are invited to a luncheon that afternoon at the Pend Oreille Pavilion at the Northern Quest Resort and Casino. Members of EWU Football’s coaching staff, including head coach Beau Baldwin, will be on hand to provide video and commentary on the players who sign with Eastern.
