Cheney drops 61-21 dual to East Valley

The Cheney High wrestling team had a short, but tough week where they lost 61-12 to Great Northern League kingpin East Valley Jan. 21. The Knights, who are 4-0 in league competition and claimed the GNL regular season title for the second year.

“We knew it was going to be a gut check night for us,” head coach Brad Rasmussen said. “We had a couple of opportunities to win matches and we saw some kids fight better than have before but there was no getting around it. East Valley is tough.”

Braden Wirth (120 pounds) and Michael Ferguson (220) were the only two Blackhawks who had wins. Ferguson who is ranked sixth in the Washington Wrestling Report’s 2A standings, pinned Court Kessinger late in the first period of their match. Wirth pinned Wyatt Wiedmer in the third period.

Before the dual, four wrestlers were honored on senior night: Brannon Pederson, Tyler Thomas, Kodi Smith and Justin Randolph.

Cheney (0-3) has a busy week ahead. After duals at Medical Lake Jan. 27 and Pullman Jan. 28, the Blackhawks wrap up their regular season Jan. 30-31 in Coeur d’Alene at the North Idaho Rumble.

“This is the last week to tune things up,” Rasmussen said. “The North Idaho Rumble is a real big tournament and a good chance for kids to get in some matches.”
