Weak El Niño will bring lower snow now, but could offer wetter spring
A month into the winter of 2014-15 and El Niño is making this a very predictable time of year.
Slightly warmer temps have kept the lowlands relatively free of snow, made the bean-counters at ski resorts sweat, but might make farmers smile.
This year's El Niño, featuring slightly warmer than normal sea surface temperatures, has produced just over 14 inches of snow at the National Weather Service near the Spokane International Airport.
While that's about 17.5 inches below normal as of Jan. 25, it's ahead of the 9.7 inches that had fallen by this time last year
