Letters to the Editor
Cheney residents, it is that time again to vote “yes” for our school district’s maintenance and operations levy and bond proposals.
I had the honor of serving in the Cheney Public Schools from 2008 to 2014 as an instructional coach. During those six years, I had the opportunity to work with most of the schools and departments in our district. My entire family benefited from Cheney schools. My husband Earl taught at the high school for many years and both of my children attended all 12 years in Cheney.
I have worn many hats in education, from special education, general education, high school drama assistant, highly capable coordinator, and instructional coach. Over my 40-year career, I’ve seen many changes in education and we need to continue to provide the very best opportunities for children to succeed now and in the future.
Even though both my husband and I are retired, and our children are grown, we continue to see the value of supporting the schools.
There are approximately 4,300 students and 600 staff members in our district who are directly affected by the levy and bond. We need adequate facilities, safe schools, curriculum materials for our staff to prepare excellent lessons, and funds for our school leaders to maintain and create vital programs.
Voting yes for the levy and bond is one way to give even our youngest children a voice. Their education is in our hands, and they depend on us to do the very best we can. I strongly urge you to vote and to vote “yes.” We will all reap the benefits.
Bonnie Overlie
