What you may not know about 'White Christmas'

The Holidays bring to mind favorite traditions, events and activities that bring family and friends together.

Some of my happiest memories are those of watching my favorite Holiday movies with my family. My all-time favorite is “White Christmas.” Recently I learned a few new tidbits about this beloved film.

Washington native Bing Crosby recorded Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” in 1942. But it wasn’t until 1954 that the best-selling single was turned into a musical featuring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. I really couldn’t imagine a better cast.

Interestingly though, Danny Kaye wasn’t the first choice to play Phil Davis. Originally, Fred Astaire, who played opposite Bing in “Holiday Inn,” was cast, but declined. Next, Donald O’Connor was selected but fell ill, leaving the memorable role to Danny Kaye. Sisters Betty (Clooney) and Judy Haynes (Vera-Ellen) sang a duet “Sisters” for the movie. However, Vera-Ellen couldn’t actually sing, leaving Clooney to sing both parts! Trudy Stevens sang the rest of Vera-Ellen’s songs.

A photo of Benny, the Haynes sisters’ brother, is actually of Carl Switzer who played Alfalfa on the “Little Rascals” series.

I watch this movie every year before Christmas- my tradition. I’ll enjoy it even more, knowing a little something about the cast and characters I love.
