A lengthy vehicle pursuit ended in downtown Medical Lake with the apprehension of William R. Mann, a 20-year-old alleged auto thief. Mann, released from jail Dec. 9, was arrested after crashing a stolen 1994 Ford pickup into a floral shop and was still wearing his Spokane County Jail coveralls.

Medical Lake wrestlers exacted some revenge on the Royal, Wash., Lancers by scoring a 72-0 victory with nine wins coming via pins. Earlier in the fall, Royal, the defending 1A football champs, beat the Cardinals 41-0.

Dec. 22, 1994

In an effort to compensate for the loss of nearly 90 students, and the state funding that goes with it, the Cheney School District was making plans to cut their budget by approximately $800,000.

The city of Cheney had its first property named to the Cheney Register of Historical Places, the home registered to Marion Heyer located at 24 Second St.

Cheney Blackhawks swimmers scored a sweep of Yakima schools, beating Eisenhower 101-79 and Davis 123-45, at the Eastern Washington University Aquatics Center. Gavin Peterson and David Morrison scored multiple wins for Cheney.

Dec. 27, 1984

Sixth District Republican legislators recently met with the Cheney Chamber of Commerce and vowed to work with newly elected Washington state governor, Booth Gardner.

Much to the surprise of the Cheney Free Press staff, the first buttercup of the new season was brought into the newspaper office by Anna Jarms.

Led by Bill Raunig's 25 points, the Cheney Blackhawks ran their Frontier League boy's basketball record to 2-0 following a dominating 62-34 win at West Valley of Spokane.

Dec. 26, 1974

Eastern Washington State College was preparing for what its vice president of business and management, Fred Johns, called belt tightening in light of a new budget announced by Gov. Dan Evans. The school's total operational budget for the biennium was $34.2 million.

Medical Lake earned a 59-47 basketball victory over Cheney to win their own Christmas Tournament as Marvin Stewart scored 20 points and Charlie Yankus added 16.

Dec. 25, 1964

The EWSC trustees approved final preliminary plans for more than $4 million in new construction, including $2.25 million for the new John F. Kennedy Library, plus a companion student housing tower valued at $1.73 million to be built next to the George Pearce Hall.

Winter hit with a vengeance in Cheney where heavy snow and cold temperatures closed schools for a total of six days.

The Cheney Blackhawk wrestlers earned a 44-10 victory over Medical Lake, their first over their rivals in two years with pins coming from Vern Scott at 120 pounds, Bill Purvis (127), Frank Ragans (145) and Keith Koch (154).
