Planning Commission OKs Cheney parks plan

The Cheney Planning Commission finally approved the city’s updated parks plan at its regular meeting Dec. 8. The commission began the public hearing process at their October meeting, but lack of a quorum at the November meeting pushed final review and passage to this month.

At the October meeting, commissioners asked the city’s planning staff to review specific sections of the plan and add in new information that might reflect current conditions of usage. Planner Brett Lucas said staff had inserted data about residents in the surrounding unincorporated portions of Spokane County that utilize Cheney parks, a better definition of the trails system that explains the difference between park trails and residential street trails, and language reflecting the city’s ability to fund park improvements.

Public Works Director Todd Ableman told the commission that the plan will serve to identify Cheney’s needs, but includes those within a larger, more regional scheme.

“We left the planning process pretty much open,” he said.

The parks plan now moves to the City Council for final adoption, which could be done as early as one of the upcoming January 2015 meetings.

In other news, commissioners elected to keep the monthly meeting times at 5:30 p.m. until April, at which it might be necessary to move the time to 6 p.m. to better accommodate changing schedules. Commissioner Antoinette Burkley said she would not be continuing on the commission after December due to a potential move.

Burkley’s position is up at the end of this month, leaving the city with two open seats on its main planning advisory body.
