Quentin P. "Smitty" Smith (age 85) passed away unexpectedly Nov. 8, 2014 at his home in Cheney.
He was born Dec. 1, 1928 in Sprague Wash. to Alfred and Annabell Smith. He had one brother Alfred Kermit. He attended Sprague Catholic Academy and joined the Marines in 1947. He was drafted into the army and deployed to Germany in 1951.
He married Joyce Hoff from Marlin, Wash. on Aug. 6, 1956. They had five children and were married for 56 years. She passed away in 2013.
After the military he drove delivery truck and then worked on dairy farms until he retired in 1992. He spent many years working for Alvin Dow and Fred Wilcox in Medical Lake and Cheney. Smitty and Joyce moved to Mt. Vernon, Wash. for 25 years, returning to Cheney eight years ago.
He is survived by his children, Angela Splonski (Paul) of Tyler, Wash.; Raymond Smith of Bellingham, Wash.; Melissa Smith of Oak Harbor, Wash.; Mike Smith (Theresa) of Florence, Ariz. and Jeffery Smith of Sedro Wooley, Wash. Smitty is also survived by six grandchildren, Shaun Copeland, Shannon Copeland, Mandy Smith, Rodney Splonski, Michael Cross and Shannon Cross, eight great-grandchildren and his dog Heidi.
He was preceded in death by his mother Annabell French, wife Joyce, brother Alfred and grandson Shane Splonski.
He loved spending time with family and friends and going out to dinner. He was a very generous, kind and hard working man and he will be so go greatly missed.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at Cheney Funeral Chapel. A potluck dinner will follow at the Cheney United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visit Smitty's online guestbook at cheneyfuneral.com.
