Cheney girls' swimming captures third at districts

The Cheney High girls’ swimming team took third place, with 255 points, at the Class 2A/1A District Championships, Oct. 31 – Nov. 1 in Ellensburg.

In individual events, sophomore Makenzie Norman took first in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.84 seconds and in the 100 freestyle in 54.32.

Fellow sophomore Alexis Schmidt finished second in both the 100 butterfly, in 1:03.65, and the 200 individual medley in 2:22.12.

In team events, Norman, Schmidt, Tenley Nelson and Kaylie Geschke finished first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:50.01. The team also finished third in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:00.52, which qualifies them for state in the event.

Cheney has four swimmers who will advance to the state championships, Nov. 14-15, in Federal Way, Wash., Norman and Schmidt already qualified for state in several individual events during the regular season. In last year’s state championships, Norman finished second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle while Schmidt took seventh in the 100 butterfly and 10th in the 200 freestyle.

Norman, Schmidt, Nelson and Geschke qualified for state in the 200 medley relay at the Sept. 20 meet against Ellensburg.
