SPOKANE COUNTY — Tuesday, Nov. 4, the new Spokane County Regional Solid Waste System took another step forward after the Board of County Commissioners approved the new Solid Waste Flow Control Ordinance. The new ordinance will replace the current language in the Spokane County Code and goes into effect on Nov. 17, 2014 — when Spokane County will take ownership of the two transfer stations and begin managing the regional system.
The city of Spokane will continue to own and operate the Waste to Energy Facility on the West Plains.
According to Spokane County Utilities Director Kevin Cooke, when the county assumes ownership, residents should be aware that their curbside pickup will not change and they can continue to use the transfer stations.
“All Spokane County residents will be welcome to use the Valley and North County Transfer Stations. As before, the transfer stations will accept household trash, organics and green waste, recyclables, used oil, tires, residential construction debris, and household hazardous waste. Clean Green fees will also remain the same at $47 per ton, with only a $5 minimum charge,” Cooke said in a news release.
He added, “A new service that we think will be appreciated by our customers is the convenience of Single-Stream Recycling. They will no longer have to sort their recyclable materials (newspapers, mixed paper, cardboard, glass, plastics, metals, aluminum/steel/tin cans), instead – we’ll take care of it.”
