Middle school NJHS raises money to help Junior League and Foster youth

The Medical Lake Middle School Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is having a popcorn sale, $1 a bag, during lunchtime, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until Nov. 15.

All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Junior League of Spokane, an organization that holds various events throughout the year to benefit local foster youth.

NJHS vice president Josh Marsh said Medical Lake Middle School Principal Sylvia Campbell gave the club the idea to work with the Junior League. NJHS president Chloe Haynes said it was Marsh's idea to sell popcorn.

"It's good to help these foster kids who don't get a lot of gifts," Haynes said.

Marsh said the goal is to raise $300. Although many sixth-graders bought a lot of popcorn on the first day, he hopes the other grades will step up and participate in the fundraiser.

In addition to the popcorn sale, the NJHS is collecting gifts and donations for foster children to give their foster parents gifts for Christmas. Haynes said gifts would be new and around $5 in value. She explained that students bring gifts to their first-period classes. The class that raises the most donations will win a pizza party.

"It's so foster kids can give their foster parents a token of appreciation," NJHS adviser Judy Dunbar said.

Dunbar is also working with the Junior League to see if a few of the NJHS officers can volunteer at the Foster Santa Breakfast, Dec. 6 at 9:30 a.m. at Northern Quest Resort and Casino.

"Hearing them (NJHS) talk, it sounds like they're going to be touched by helping the foster kids," Dunbar said.
