Cheney swimming tops Selah and Prosser

The Cheney High girls’ swimming team continues their momentum on their way to districts.

The Blackhawks defeated Selah, 101-60, Oct. 9. Several Cheney swimmers took first place in individual events including Makenzie Norman, 50-yard freestyle, 100 freestyle; Alexis Schmidt, 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly; Tenley Nelson, 100 breaststroke and Kaylie Geschke, 200 freestyle.

In team events, Norman, Schmidt, Nelson and Brittany Meyer finished first in the 200 medley relay. Sam Abbott, Melissa Johnson, Meghan Krantz and Evarosa Perry took the top spot in the 400 freestyle relay. Times from the meet were not available at press time.

The Blackhawks had their last home meet, Oct. 16, where they defeated Prosser, 97-73.

Norman qualified for state in the 100 butterfly after she finished first in 1 minute and 1.58 seconds. She, Johnson and Abbott took the top three spots in the 100 backstroke.

In the 100 breaststroke, Schmidt and Guana finished first and third respectively. Schmidt, Nelson and Geschke took the top three places in the 500 freestyle. Meyer finished first in the 100 freestyle while Corlett took third in the 50 freestyle.

In team races, Izzie Corlett, Nelson, Norman and Schmidt took first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:51.77. Geschke, Nelson, Norman and Schmidt finished first in the 400 freestyle. Corlett, Guana, Krantz and Meyer finished second in the 200 medley relay.

The Blackhawks have one last hurdle before districts as they travel to Pullman, Oct. 25, to face the Greyhounds in their final meet of the regular season.

Head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said the team did well these last two meets and will focus on their speed and getting in better shape as they get ready for Pullman.

“There is going to be a lot of hard work this week and then one week of rest before districts,” Hochwalt said.
