Cardinals still seeking first volleyball victory in 2014

Four matches remain on the 2014 volleyball season for Medical Lake.

And sometime in the next two weeks head coach Amanda Higgins hopes her team can find a way to start strong with a set victory. Because that’s what she thinks might be the catalyst that gets the winless Cardinals (0-10) headed in the right direction.

“With four matches left, we are trying to figure out how to pull out that first game in the match,” Higgins wrote in an email. “We feel that if we win that first game then we can take that momentum in the next two and finish the night with a win.”

That nearly happened last Tuesday when the Cardinals hosted Deer Park (4-6), losing a heartbreaking opening set 26-28 on the way to another 3-0 loss with the final two set scores 16-25 and 15-25. Calin Mandapat led Medical Lake with eight digs and Cassidy Hagel had seven kills.

“We have come close multiple times and now we just need to finish it,” Higgins said. “We have been working on some team building and attacking the volleyball so we are hopeful to pull out a win within these next two weeks.”

Thursday night at Lakeside, Medical Lake dropped another 3-0 decision, 14-25, 14-25, 15-25 to the 10-0 Eagles. Mandpat added seven digs and Annette Carlson six kills.

The Cardinals were on the road at Newport (5-6) this past Tuesday and host Freeman (10-1) tonight, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. They will play those matches shorthanded, however.

Kaylee Keith is out the rest of the season with an ankle injury. Claire Dormaier is sidelined this week with a concussion.
