Blackhawks sweep Eagles and Bantams

The Cheney High volleyball team appears to be gaining momentum as they approach the last couple of weeks of the regular season. Last week they swept both West Valley and Clarkston, 3-0 in both matches, in Great Northern League (GNL) play.

The team traveled to West Valley, Oct. 9, where they beat the Eagles for the second time this season. The game scores were 25-15, 25-18 and 25-22.

Head coach Courtney Webb said her team played a solid game, both offensively and defensively.

“We were getting a lot of digs and executing plays,” Webb said. “We worked well as a team and played a scrappy game.”

Senior Kimber Case led the match with 15 digs, bringing her regular season total to 46.

Two days after their win over the Eagles, the Blackhawks upset the Bantams for the first time this year, with scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 28-26. Clarkston previously beat Cheney, 3-1, Sept. 16 and again on Oct. 2.

Webb said her team showed more fight and consistency against the Bantams this time around, particularly in the second and third games.

“The girls really pulled it together and finished out those games,” Webb said. “They didn’t settle for anything less.”

Webb said her team’s confidence and focus has grown since the beginning of the season, with many players stepping into leadership roles.

Cheney is tied for third place with Clarkston in the league standings — both teams are 3-5 in the GNL and 3-6 overall. The Blackhawks can stay in third as long as they can remain one win ahead of the Bantams for the rest of the season, which won’t be easy.

After their match against second-place Pullman (5-2, 6-3), Oct. 14, Cheney hosts first-place East Valley (7-0, 7-1) Thursday (Oct. 16) at 7 p.m. The Knights have swept the Blackhawks twice this season.

Webb said the team is focusing on executing plays and blocking. She is also helping her team get in the mindset of playing at the same level as East Valley.

“It’s the little things that are going to matter in these next couple of matches,” Webb said.
