Carla Davis received the 2014 Volunteer of the Year award for the Medical Lake Sheriff Community Oriented Policy Effort (SCOPE) station.
Davis has been a SCOPE volunteer since 2010. Prior to joining SCOPE, she volunteered in various areas throughout Spokane County, including the Care and Share in Medical Lake, Habitat for Humanity on Trent in Spokane and as a volunteer firefighter at Nine Mile. She decided to join SCOPE after a friend told her about it.
Davis does traffic control at different events around the city. She also helps with the Operation Family Identification (OFID) program, and assists with distribution at the food bank and patrols around the city.
"We check the problem areas and make sure that people are not doing things they shouldn't be doing," Davis said. "If someone calls and asks 'can you do this?' or 'can you attend this event?' If I'm not busy, I'll tell them 'sure, I'll help with whatever is needed.'"
Davis enjoys volunteering with SCOPE because it gives her an opportunity to help the community. It also gives her a chance to educate children about how SCOPE can help them.
"They learn that law enforcement is their friend," Davis said.
Medical Lake SCOPE president Bennett Traylor said Davis always has a "can-do attitude" and is willing to step up and help in any way.
"It's always good to have her in your corner," Traylor said. "She is always helping to make the Medical Lake station one of the best stations around."
In addition to working at their own station, Davis said SCOPE volunteers assist the Spokane County Sheriff deputies that patrol Medical Lake.
"We also assist the other SCOPE stations, and vice versa," Davis said. "We are happy to assist them."
For Davis, receiving the Volunteer of the Year award was an honor. She said she hopes to continue to volunteer with SCOPE.
"I have no plans of leaving," Davis said. "Though if I did leave, I could see myself volunteering somewhere else. I'm committed to volunteering."
