Cheney finds success at Sheridan Classic

The Cheney High volleyball team had a busy week, dropping Great Northern League (GNL) matches to East Valley, Sept. 30 and Clarkston, Oct. 2. They also took a break from league action, Oct. 3-4, to compete in the Linda Sheridan Volleyball Classic tournament where they won three out of five matches.

The Knights shut out the Blackhawks, 3-0, for the second time this season. The games scores were 25-15, 25-14 and 25-12.

Head coach Courtney Webb said she knew the rematch against East Valley, who leads the GNL, would be tough.

“We weren’t on top of our game that night,” Webb said. “It’s tough when you’re playing a good team, but I think they’re beatable and we’re lucky we get another go at them.”

The Blackhawks found themselves in another nail biter against Clarkston. The game scores were 25-16, 25-15, 11-25 and 25-21.

After being down two sets, the Blackhawks gained momentum, and won the third set to prevent the shutout. The Bantams took the lead in the fourth game, but Cheney fought back to make it close.

“It was awesome to go after them,” Webb said. “Even in the fourth set when we were behind, I was glad to see them fight back. We’re improving as things go along.”

During the Sheridan Classic, the Blackhawks lost to Mount Spokane (no score provided) in the first round. They picked up back-to-back wins over Reardan (25-15, 25-16) and Oaksdale (27-25) before they dropped a match to Ridgefield (13-25). Cheney beat Rogers (28-26) in their last match.

Webb said it was nice for her team to get a chance to play schools outside of the GNL.

“We didn’t have to worry about how one game can affect our standings,” Webb said. “It was just ‘go and compete’ for us.”

Cheney (1-5 GNL, 1-6 overall) still sits in fourth place in the league standings. They travel to West Valley, Oct. 9, to take on the fifth-place Eagles (0-6, 0-8) then have back-to-back home matches against second-place Pullman Greyhounds (4-1, 5-2), Oct. 14, and East Valley (6-0, 6-1), Oct. 16.
