Volleyball leads 2014 Hall of Fame class

Volleyball/basketball player Janelle Ruen-Allen and the 2001 and 2002 Eagle Volleyball teams she played on are among the 14th class of inductees in the Eastern Athletics Hall of Fame, and will be honored on Oct. 3-4, 2014, in Cheney. In addition, football player Greg Gavin and contributor Judy Crabb will be inducted, and men’s basketball player Jack Perrault will be honored posthumously.

The 2001 and 2002 volleyball squads combined for a 50-8 record under former and current head coach Wade Benson, who returned to coach the Eagles in the 2013 season.

A multi-sport standout in volleyball and basketball, Ruen-Allen was honored in both 2001 and 2002 as the Inland Northwest Female Athlete of the Year by the Spokane Sportswriters and Broadcasters.

Crabb has been the backbone of the Eastern Athletic Department for four decades, serving as the department secretary and has nearly 40 years of experience at EWU.

Gavin twice earned NAIA All-America honors as a center for Eastern’s football team, earning first team honors in 1969 and second team accolades in 1968. He also played on Eastern’s 1967 team advanced to the NAIA championship game in 1967.

An incredible athlete who later became a quarterback at Washington State, Perrault lettered for Eastern’s basketball team from 1942-45 and played in the NAIA Tournament three of the years.

Eastern soccer gets split at home

The Eastern Washington women’s soccer team tied the program record for goals in a match, Sept. 28, beating Weber State, 5-1.

Eastern closed out the weekend by improving to 4-4 and to 1-1 in Big Sky conference play following Friday’s 2-1 overtime loss to Idaho State.

Eastern got a pair of goals from Cassie Black with single tallies from Chloe Williams, Kiana Hafferty and Savannah Hoekstra. The Eagles’ five-goal performance tied the program’s previous best single match high which occurred back in 2009

Goalkeeper Nathalie Schwery recorded 10 saves. Eastern outshot Weber State 20-19.

Friday against ISU, Eastern had an early lead on Williams’ goal in the 18th minute. But the first of two goals by the Bengals’ Katherine Roberts late in the 79th minute tied it. Roberts won it in overtime in the 107th minute. Schwery had four saves for the Eagles.

Eastern travels to face Portland State Friday, Oct. 3, and then are at Sacramento State Sunday, Oct. 5.

Eagles split in volleyball opener

The Eastern Washington University women’s volleyball team rallied to win the final three sets and score a 3-2 victory over host Northern Colorado to claim a crucial Big Sky Conference road victory Sept. 27 in Greeley, Colo.

The win allowed the Eagles to split their first road trip following a 3-1 loss Sept. 25 at the University of North Dakota .

Kelsey Julian tied her career high with 21 kills, hitting .559 for the match (21-2-34). She added three blocks and one dig to her stat line. Talia Fermantez went for 15 kills and six blocks and hit .667.

In the opening match of the trip Fermantez led all players with a season-high 15 kills while hitting .407.

Eastern improved to 5-10 overall as they open the home portion of their conference schedule, Oct. 2 hosting Southern Utah and Friday, Oct. 3 when new Big Sky member, the University of Idaho, visits. Both matches begin at 6 p.m.
