Blackhawks down Clarkston for 2-0 cross country start

The Cheney High School boys and girls cross country teams ran their respective Great Northern League records to 2-0 with convincing wins last Wednesday in Clarkston. It was the Blackhawks only meet last week.

The Cheney boys landed all five of their varsity runners in the first seven slots, led by seniors Steaven Zachman and Kameron Galm, first and second in 17 minutes, 26.04 seconds and 17:40.27 respectively. Zachman and Galm were followed by Mason Van Stone, Kaleb Lerch and Carson Kerr to down the Bantams 15-50. Matt Christianson was sixth and Luke Huguenin finished seventh.

Cheney’s girls captured five of the first six spots to knock off Clarkston 20-41. Hannah Spakousky finished second in 20:57.05, 40.32 seconds behind Bantams’ senior Lindsey Heflin.

Senior Mattie McNair followed Spakousky, finishing third in 21:14.38, with Jolene Whiteley, Lexi Brooks and Shannen Gladden fourth, fifth and sixth. Jessica Vietzke and Alecia Brooks were eighth and ninth.

The meet pace for the Blackhawks will pick up over the next 10 days. Cheney travels to Yakima for the multi-team Sunfair Invitational this Saturday, Oct. 4, and return home to face West Valley in GNL action next Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Salnave Park before heading to the Tri-Cities for the Richland Invitational Oct. 11.
