Airway Heights hosts fall clean up

Airway Heights residents who need to get rid of their yard waste can head to the Fall Community Clean Up, Saturday, Oct. 18.

While the city’s Parks and Recreation staff will be accepting clean yard and garden waste at the Parks Maintenance Building at 924, S. Lawson St.

The city has a community cleanup in the spring. J.C. Kennedy Airway Heights Parks, Recreation and Community Services director, explained that the fall clean up gives residents a chance to get rid of their yard waste for free, instead of paying to dump it at the Waste to Energy Plant. The costs to self-haul clean yard waste at the plant is a minimum charge of $5 for up to 220 pounds, and an additional 47 cents for each additional 20 pounds.

Kennedy said that homeowners are responsible for trimming overgrown bushes and trees back and branches up to seven feet above the width of the sidewalk.

Crews will accept trimmed branches less than 2 inches in diameter, tree leaves, pinecones and needles, grass clippings, thatch and garden vegetation.

“We don’t want someone to bring branches that are 8 inches around and 20 feet long,” Kennedy said, adding that it would take up too much space.

Staff will not accept dirt, sod, rocks, untrimmed tree branches, plastic bags and general household garbage.

The cost is free, but a photo ID and water bill will be required for proof of residency.
