EWU Gallery of Art welcomes Marvin Smith's 'Untitled' exhibition

Eastern Washington University Gallery of Art presents “Untitled,” an exhibition of paintings by artist Marvin Smith, Oct. 8 — Nov. 25, 2014. Smith will give a gallery talk on Wednesday, Oct.8 at noon in the EWU Gallery of Art. A reception will be held following the gallery talk.

According to a news release, Smith describes his “Untitled” paintings as “non-objective realism,” which he describes as “a state of being devoid of conventional object-background, art without context.”

Smith’s artist statement consists of five ideas taken from sources ranging from photographer Ansel Adams to the Buddhist concept of “emptiness.”

“I can’t explain my work, if I could then I wouldn’t paint,” Smith said in the release. “My painting attempts to go beyond the limits of language. If you must have a descriptive term to assign then call them ‘meditation objects.’”

Smith’s work is often compared to American Abstract Expressionist, Mark Rothko. While he says he is “flattered” to be compared to Rothko, Smith is quick to point out that Rothko was interested in balance and proportion, something he avoids.

The eleven images that make up “Untitled” are taken from three suites of paintings created over the past decade. Eight images are taken from the “Untitled Suite,” two from the “Bereishith Suite” and a single work from the “Kundalini Suite.”
