Cheney council to interview candidates Sept. 30 for open position

The Cheney City Council is holding a special meeting Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers in order to interview five candidates for the open council position left vacant by the resignation of long-time Councilman Bob Stockton in August.

Candidates for the position are Ryan Gaard, Gail A. Gueths-Pollard, Debra Morgan, Tom Neubauer and James Wallingford. The council will interview the candidates applying for the vacant, $450 a month, position, and while the public is invited and welcome to attend, no public comment or questions will be taken during Tuesday’s meeting.

Gaard has lived in Cheney since 1998, graduating from Eastern Washington University with a bachelor of art’s degree in 2002 and has been employed in the EWU Marketing and Communications Department since then. Gueths-Pollard has live in Cheney since 2005 and has years of experience as a certified public accountant.

Morgan has been a Cheney resident since 1987 and has been a lecturer in Eastern’s College of Business and Public Administration since 2000. Neubauer does not list his length of residency in Cheney, but notes he has a master’s of business degree in organizational strategy and management from Western Governor University and is currently a medical billing advocate for patients and hospital clients at Cardon Outreach.

Wallingford has live in Cheney for nearly 30 years and worked for the city’s Police Department for 20 years. He received a bachelor of art’s degree in psychology in 1978 from EWU, and has previously run for City Council.

Final selection of the candidate to fill the seat will not be made Tuesday. The appointment will expire Dec. 31, 2015, and to continue in office the successful candidate will have to run for re-election to a full, four-year term during the 2015 campaign season.
