City begins preparation for Sunset Park restroom

The city of Airway Heights is getting ready to make way for their new CXT restroom facility and splash pad at Sunset Park.

The City Council approved the purchase of the facility at the July 21 meeting.

The Public Works department opened a trench in the area of the park near Lawson Street to install sewer and water pipes for the restroom. The city temporarily closed the stretch of Lawson Street near the park during the construction.

"We tried to open Lawson Street back up as soon as possible, especially since it's a busy route and located near the elementary school," Airway Heights Parks, Recreation and Community Services director, J.C. Kennedy, said.

The City Council awarded WM Winkler Company the bid for the project for $15,986.52 at its Sept. 1 meeting. Kennedy said the city sent the contract to Winkler, who will have to provide bonding and insurance to the city.

"Once that is finished, the city will set up a site meeting of where the bathroom will go and we'll proceed from there," Kennedy said. "It's a lot of hurry and waiting, but the project is coming along."

Kennedy said that Winkler will create the pad for the CXT facility to sit on. As for the splash pad, the city has already received all of the equipment. Winkler is also volunteering their services to construct the concrete base for the splash pad.

"Once Winkler begins the project, the work should happen fast," Kennedy said. "I think he's working on both the restroom and the splash pad projects simultaneously. It worked out well for us."

Kennedy and Glen Pike, park maintenance coordinator, will go to CXT Concrete Buildings in Spokane Valley and examine the structures' chase area, which is the space between the men's and women's restrooms.

The chase area is where the restroom hooks up to the sewer. Electrical equipment can also be stored in the chase.

Kennedy said the city is looking to have most of the projects finished by late September or early October.

"We're planning to have a city clean-up day, Oct. 11 so hopefully we can have this done before then," Kennedy said.
