Medical Lake resident and Spokane city employee, John Aiken, threw his hat into the ring for consideration to become Washington's next governor by adding his name to the ballot.
Scott Blasingame became Medical Lake High School's new principal following the sudden departure of Roger Fox who resigned to accept the job of superintendent of schools in Quincy, Wash.
Brett Igbinoba rushed for 186 yards and two touchdowns as the Cheney Blackhawks knocked off the Cascade Kodiaks of Leavenworth 21-12 in the opening game of the season for the two schools.

Cheney police believe they foiled a robbery at Ray's Conoco when they arrested three juveniles seen loitering and acting suspiciously near the business. The suspects, all 16 years old and each with a criminal record, were found to have been driving a stolen car and in possession of a gun.
Thousands of rainbow trout were seen floating dead in West Medical Lake, the apparent victims of low water and oxygen levels.
The Eastern Washington Eagles were preparing for the launch of the Big Sky Conference head-coaching career of Mike Kramer in a home game at Woodward Stadium against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Kramer played at Idaho, was an assistant at Montana State and had been at EWU since 1989. He took over for Dick Zornes who stepped down to become the school's athletics director.

Eastern Washington University announced the groundbreaking of a Business and Technology Incubation Center at the new Spokane Airport Business Park.
The Cheney School Board approved their 1984-85 operating budget of $10.19 million at their recent meeting.
Cheney and Connell, two teams that finished 7-0 in 1983 in respective league play, were set to meet in the opening game of the new football season.

One of the most hotly contested primary election races in Spokane County was thought to be that of the 6th Legislative District between a pair of Republicans, incumbent Sam Guess and challenger Nancy Burnett.
Local electrical rates were expected to rise 15-20 percent, not the 31.7 percent suggested earlier which would have countered a wholesale price increase from wholesaler, the Bonneville Power Administration.
Place kicker Dave Wilcox opened scoring with a 34-yard field goal and Paul Harris caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Kelly Williams to help Cheney on the way to a 37-0 opening night football victory over Deer Park. The Blackhawks also got 93 yards rushing from Brock Reitan.

Cheney School District voters were reminded to cast their ballots in the coming week in support of both a 1-year special maintenance and operations levy totaling $177,894 and a bond of $500,000 to construct a new high school.
Enrollment was up slightly in Medical Lake School District with first day totals at all schools at 1,913. Medical Lake Elementary was up to 345 from 300 in 1963. Blair Elementary at Fairchild Air Force Base showed a slight increase, 282 from 270.
While Cheney High School head football coach Jim Hatch still had many positions to decide in the lineup, one decision, that of who would play quarterback, had been made with sophomore Tom Oswald earning the job.
