WP Bandits finish season at CDA Tourney

The West Plains Bandits concluded their 2014 season competing in the 14U “A” Western Regional Softball Tournament at Coeur d’Alene, July 18-19.

The Bandits finished 1-2, falling in their opener 9-7 to the Idaho Extreme, beating the Coeur d’Alene Crush 9-5 before being shutout and no-hit by the Oregon Thunder.

“We are a B-team that decided to stay local and play up in the A-division for experience,” Bandits’ coach Byron Pavao wrote in an email.

The Bandits fought back from a 6-1 deficit in their contest against the Extreme with Glori Cheevers going 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI. Brianna Hecker also had a pair of hits and two runs scored.

“We should have won our first game if not for some early inning jitters which allowed them to get out in front of us,” Pavao said.

Cheevers, Hannah Petek and Taylor Pavao each had two hits to lead the Bandits, who got off to a fast start by scoring six runs in their first at bat in their win.

In their final game, the Bandits faced the one-two pitching punch of Julie Ferguson and Reyan Tuck who combined to throw an 11-strikeout no-hitter.
