Federal government offering drought relief emergency loans

SPOKANE – The federal government automatically activated a disaster relief program on May 28 for farmers and ranchers in Chelan, Lincoln and Walla Walla counties affected by recent drough conditions.

According to a Farm Service Agency news release, the program was activated after the three counties experienced D2 drought conditions for eight consecutive weeks.

Due to their proximity to the affected counties, farmers and ranchers in 15 Washington counties, including Spokane, may also be eligible for this disaster relief program which provides FSA emergency loans at 3.125 percent with payment terms up to 40 years.

Farmers in eligible counties have eight months from the date of the designation to apply for loans to help cover part of their actual losses. FSA will consider each loan application on its own merits, taking into account the extent of the losses, security available and repayment ability.

FSA has a wide variety of programs, in addition to the emergency loan program, to help farmers recover from adversity. These programs include the Emergency Conservation Program, Livestock Forage Disaster Program, Livestock Indemnity Program, Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees and Farm-raised Fish Program and the Tree Assistance Program.
