Stats show increase in Airway Heights crime

The Airway Heights Police Department has been busy these past several months as there has been an increase in criminal activity throughout the city.

According to crime statistics provided by the Police Department, there were 3,145 tracked incidents from January to May 2014. This is up from the 2,802 incidents from January to May of last year.

The Police Department has conducted 573 reports, investigations and arrests. This is 94 more reports, investigations and arrests than around this time last year. Warrant arrests are up by 44.

The Northeast portion of the city accounts for 49 percent of the total incidents with 1,574.

According to Cpl. Leland Verain, property crimes such as burglary, criminal trespass, fraud, forgery, vehicle prowls and malicious mischief are up. Robberies have gone down.

Verain added that violent crimes such as domestic abuse, domestic disputes and harassment are down from last year.

The Police Department has responded to 380 incidents at Northern Quest Casino, 73 more than last year. The majority of the incidents were traffic violations, agency assists, warrant arrests and suspicious circumstances.

The Police Department had 319 agency assist calls, 106 more than last year.

Traffic incidents have gone down throughout the city. There have been 762 incidents so far, 193 less than last year. Non-injury collisions went up from seven to 30. Hit-and-run accidents and abandoned vehicles also increased. Reckless driving, DUIs, traffic stops and injury collisions have gone down.

Code violations have gone up by 140. Civil disputes, custody disputes, juvenile problems and serve protection orders have also increased. Dog complaints, noise complaints and neighbor disputes were down.
